District 8 Mid-Week Work Trip (Hogpen Gap to Unicoi Gap)
District 8 of the A.T. is between Hogpen Gap and Unicoi Gap. This Mid-Week work trip will be in Section 8.14. The Jacks Knob Trail is used by thousands of hikers every year to reach Chattahoochee Gap, where the Chattahoochee Spring flows out of the hillside, or do a day hike to either Unicoi Gap or Hog Pen Gap. Section 8.14 has 13 areas of side hill cut that need your help. While the water is flowing off the trail nicely, the trail bed itself is slipping and needs to be re-established. We’ll meet at Jacks Gap (Georgia State Highway 180 and 180 Spur that goes up to Brasstown Bald) and hike to the work areas. This side hill repair is before entering Mark Trail Wilderness, so the hike to the work site is less than half a mile. Refreshments are provided for everyone when we come off the trail by 4 pm.
Long pants and sturdy shoes or boots are required. Hard hats, work gloves and other tools and safety equipment will be provided for volunteers who need them.
