Education
Tap into the Georgia Appalachian Trail Club knowledge bank and learn from our 1,000 members who share their experience and technical expertise on outdoor recreation, conservation, and of course, all things related to the Appalachian Trail. Or volunteer to lead a class on one of your favorite topics.
National Trails Day
National Trails Day, created by the American Hiking Society and taking place on the first Saturday in June, inspires the public and trail enthusiasts nationwide to discover, learn about, and celebrate trails while participating in educational exhibits, trail dedications, gear demonstrations, instructional workshops, and trail work projects.
Backpacking Seminars
Whether you’re planning your first overnight backpacking trip or training for an ambitious section hike, our backpacking seminars can help you prepare. You’ll learn how to select appropriate equipment, get in shape, plan your hike, stay safe, and other practical information designed to build your self-reliance so you’ll have an enjoyable outdoors experience.
Programs and Presentations
GATC volunteers host information booths at various outdoor events in Atlanta and north Georgia and conduct seminars and presentations to groups upon request. GATC also participates in the Len Foote Hike Inn Speakers Program, where our speakers educate guests on a variety of topics relating to hiking, the A.T., outdoor recreation and conservation. For more information contact the Information & Education Director.
Sawyer Certification
All volunteers using a chain saw or crosscut saw on the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest must successfully complete a sawyer certification workshop.
The certification workshop, conducted by the U.S. Forest Service, prepares volunteers to safely operate a chainsaw or crosscut saw in order to remove blow downs and cut materials needed for trail-work projects. For more information, contact the Trails Supervisor.
