Workshop – Introduction to Rock Work

This workshop will be led by Tom Lamb, Chair of the Rock Crew, a Master Maintainer and also GATC Trails Supervisor.  Tom periodically spends many trail hours with the Jolly Rovers in New York, a leading volunteer rock crew, and brings back his knowledge of current best management practices to the GATC Rock Crew.  Recommended for anyone, regardless of experience, who has not worked with the GATC Rock Crew to learn procedures as specifically practiced by the crew.  Learn the basics or rock crew work and safety while working with rocks on the trail.

Participants will be introduced to the use of specialized rock work equipment including setup and operation of the rope puller, belay device and the use of snatch rings.  Maneuvering rock with rock bars, pick mattocks and rock nets.  Splitting rock using an electric drill, carbide hammer sets and feathers and wedges.  Shaping rocks using a carbide hammer point, wedges and chisels.
